Carve Your Own Hitty
Carving Hitty's Face

Step 7:

A series of small refinements are done at this stage.

Carve the temple area above the cheekbones so it is a bit narrower. When viewed face-on, the temples should be the same width as, or narrower than, the widest point of the face, which is the cheekbones. Retain a fairly sharp edge from the outside of the cheekbone, extending up into the forehead-- this will help us define the eyes in later stages.

Continue shaping out the cheeks/jaw/chin as you work on the features.

Redefine the lipline. It should be deeper and a little wider at the corners. You must decide how much of a smile Hitty should have and begin to create a lipline based on the width and curve you need for her desired expression.

Be careful with her smile-- very gently upturned corners on the lipline will create a bigger smile than you might expect. Remember, the lipline will continue to be widened and extended as we carve out the lips and the shape you create now may be exaggerated in the finished face.

Carve a small dip under the nose and above the upper lip, separating them slightly for the first time. Shape out the deeper vertical curves on either side of the upper lip. These new 'valleys' are deeper under the nostrils, and are not as deep at the edge of the lip-- at the edge of the lip they are almost gone. The upper lip's 'valleys' are not as deep as those bracketing the lower lip and chin. The upper lip should always be larger and more prominent than the lower lip, and will usually remain connected fairly closely to the nose in the center.
