Carving Hitty's Face

Step 6:

It's time to carve the cheeks away again, advancing on the work we did in Step 5. Aim by the end of this step for a clearly defined nose/lip/chin profile, with features unobscured by the cheek-line, which should be carved well back on either side. (The nose/lip area will still remain connected through this step.) If the cheeks obscure any of the features in profile, the doll is probably too apple-cheeked, and the cheeks should be carved back farther. It's also important to remove the appearance of jowls on the lower part of the cheeks by narrowing the face and jaw below the cheekbones. Do some carving-back in the cheekbone area as well, especially to bring out the nose, but the lower portion of the face and jaw is narrower than the cheekbones for older children, many teens and most young females. Carve away all remaining 'corners' on the cheeks at this point, except a rounded but well-defined edge on the chin and lower edge of the jawbone. There can still be a sharp edge between the eye/temple at the end of this stage.
