Use Your Beautiful Vintage Hankie as a Bed Sheet

There is a wide selection of soft, vintage hankies available today. Size and pattern placement are important.
See Sara's buying guide in this issue for tips on purchasing vintage hankies.

A beautiful vintage hankie makes a soft and attractive sheet for your Hitty's bed. The best part is, you can put on the sheet without cutting the hankie, thus saving it for future use, should you need it for something else. Place the mattress squarely in the center of the hankie. If the hankie is too small, it will not fit right (see photo #1).

A larger hankie will fit with plenty of folding space. It can be pinned, or merely folded envelope style under the mattress. You can also tack it in place with a needle and thread.

#1--this hankie is too small, and will not fit correctly, even when pinned.

There are two decisions when it comes to choosing a vintage hankie as a bed sheet. First, do you want the sheet to be white or printed, and if printed, where the placement of the hankie pattern lies.

If you plan to use a printed hankie, you need to look carefully at the design. If it doesn't fill in the center of the hankie, you will end up with most of the design under the mattress (see Photo #2)

#2--most of the design is hidden under the mattress.

With picture #3, you can see that a more central design was chosen, and the results are prettier. Of course, if you are using a plain white hankie, that is not an issue.

#3 The hankie has a pleasing design that lends itself well to a sheet.
